How KHDA School Ratings Work: What Every Dubai Parent Must Know

Choosing a private school in Dubai can feel overwhelming. With more than 210 private schools operating across 17 different curricula, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) provides a vital compass through its annual Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB) inspections.

1. The 6 KHDA Inspection Rating Tiers

Every private school in Dubai that has been in operation for at least three academic years undergoes comprehensive, on-site inspections by international and local DSIB evaluators. Schools are awarded one of six overarching performance levels:

⭐ Outstanding (23 Schools)

Significantly exceeds UAE national agenda targets. Exceptional teaching quality, leadership, and student outcomes across almost all subject areas.

✨ Very Good (48 Schools)

Strong performance that exceeds expected standards with consistently high-quality teaching, personal development, and curriculum adaptation.

👍 Good (85 Schools)

The target minimum standard expected by the Government of Dubai. Provides an effective education meeting all statutory requirements.

⚠️ Acceptable (51 Schools)

Meets basic minimum criteria but demonstrates noticeable inconsistencies in teaching quality, student progress, or governance.

2. The Core Quality Indicators Evaluated

DSIB inspectors evaluate schools using the UAE Unified Inspection Framework across six fundamental performance standards:

  • Students' Achievement: Attainment and progress in core subjects (English, Mathematics, Science, Arabic as a First and Additional Language, and Islamic Education).
  • Personal and Social Development: Student behavior, understanding of Islamic values, UAE culture, and environmental responsibility.
  • Teaching and Assessment: The effectiveness of classroom instruction, differentiation for diverse learning needs, and formative testing.
  • Curriculum Design & Adaptation: How well the curriculum aligns with international standards and supports students with determination (SEND).
  • Health, Safety, and Safeguarding: Child protection protocols, campus maintenance, and student wellbeing support.
  • Leadership and Management: Vision, governance, parental partnerships, and teacher retention.

3. Why an 'Acceptable' or 'Good' School Might Still Be Right for You

Many international parents assume only 'Outstanding' schools are worth considering. In practice:

  • Outstanding schools often command fees between AED 55,000 and AED 105,000+ per year.
  • Many schools rated 'Good' or 'Very Good' deliver outstanding pastoral care, community warmth, or specific arts/sports programs at significantly lower fee tiers (AED 12,000 to AED 35,000).
  • Schools frequently receive lower overall ratings solely due to challenges in Arabic Language or Islamic Studies progression, while their Mathematics, Sciences, and GCSE/A-Level results remain world-class.
